Ott, Bernhard 2011 Wagram Grüner Veltliner Qvevre

A complete about-face from the rest of Ott's traditional, stainless steel based production. The wine is a revelation, taking Grüner Veltliner to stunning places it's never been before both aromatically and on the palate. Fans of Gravner, Radikon, et al, must give this wine a try. -jfr

From the importer, the good folks at Terry Theise Selections:

"The wine is almost entirely sourced from the Rosenberg, de-stemmed without crushing and placed whole-berry into amphora ranging in size from 500 to 2,000 liters.  The amphoras are buried in the soils of Rosenberg and Bernhard ages the wine, untouched, for 6 months before the wine is racked clear.  The grapes are never crushed, helping retain the purity of the wine and not allowing it to become clouded with over extracted tannin.  The wine is then bottled without filtration."

Immich-Batterieberg 2011 Mosel Zeppwingert Riesling

Finally, Zeppwingert. Gernot only has .5 hectares and it's directly next to Batterieberg. It's a terraced, ungrafted, old-vine section, and the vines used to belong to our friends at Weiser-Künstler until they sold to Kollmann. Aromatically vivid, with a light underlying wild streak to the nose, the wine is the sweetest of the lineup (many others in the Mosel would call it a feinherb, though; this is still dinner Riesling). Perfect balance, and while some of the other wines may be more contemplative, Zeppwingert is hands down the most delicious. This is another one with "sky's the limit" aging potential. I'm excited to track its development over many years. -jfr

Immich-Batterieberg 2013 Mosel Ellergrub Riesling

Gernot’s part of the Ellergrub lies just to the left of Weiser-Künstler’s parcel, which is great because they also work without chemicals in the vineyards. The 2.2 hectares of vines are 80 years and older and are ungrafted. The 2013 is having a moment right now, (re-tasted in 03/2017) showing development on the nose with deep honeysuckle notes, mirrored on the palate, along with ripe juicy peach, wildflower honey, and dark stones, managing to be both ethereal and powerful. Müller-Catoir 1991 Pfalz Haardter Herrenletten Gewürztraminer Eiswein 375 ml

What to serve with all sorts of warming, rich, spiced desserts? Gewürztraminer Eiswein! Grown on loamy soils with limestone and clay in the Haardter Herrenletten, left to freeze in the winter and harvested with an intense level of sugars and acidity. We were lucky to grab some of these from a private cellar, but haven't been able to try them yet! However, all signs point to this bottle being an awesome pairing for the sweeter end of your holiday table! Cari Bernard

Boxler 2005 Alsace Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg "E"

The "E" cuvee is from the upper slope of Sommerberg, on decomposed granite with mica, usually the more purely mineral of Boxler's Sommerberg rieslings. In 2005 there is a lovely richness to the fruit but the aromas have an aspect of stony acids mingling with the exotic yellow fruits, flowers and lime. Very complex aromas, to describe them would be a bit ridiculous. The palate is dense, but not heavy, round and supple but with good acidity. A gorgeous riesling from a ripe vintage that's delicious now and will age beautifully.

Boxler 2014 Alsace Pinot Blanc Réserve

From 40+ year-old vines planted in granite soils. Boxler's 2014 Pinot Blanc Réserve offers aromas of apple blossoms, white peach, and wet stone on the nose. The midweight palate balances pure flavors of stone fruit, golden delicious apple, and acacia honey with a fine mineral structure and a fresh lifted finish. Albert Boxler is known for their stellar grand cru Rieslings, but even their Pinot Blancs are exceptional. John McIlwain

Frick 2008 Alsace Grand Cru Riesling Vorbourg

The Grand Cru Vorbourg is a south-east facing slope of mostly limestone with well drained sand and gravel top-soils. This wine took two years to finish, finally undergoing a second fermentation and ending up dry at 13.5 % alc. Lovely, very complex aromas, a quite full mid-palate with yellow fruits, citrus and menthol, very earthy and long with good acidity. This will accompany full-flavored fish and poultry dishes, and will age beautifully.

Gindl, Michael 2012 Niederösterreich Grüner Veltliner "Buteo 12"

Michael Gindl currently works 8 hectares of Demeter-certified vineyards in the Weinviertel, about 30 km northeast of Vienna. The Buteo “twelve” is made from Grüner Veltliner grown on loam and loess soils on gently rolling hills outside of his home village of Hohenruppersdorf. The grapes macerate for ten hours on the skins, are gently pressed, naturally ferment in barrel, and then age on the lees for 12 months in 700L Acacia barrels made with wood sourced from Gindl’s own forest. Unfined, unfiltered, with no SO2 added, the wine is very floral and herbaceous, with vibrant acidity and a pleasantly savory tone. Cari Bernard

Hirtzberger 2011 Wachau Riesling Smaragd Singerriedl

Singerriedl is Hirtzberger's signature vineyard; furthest east in Spitz, and planted to Riesling, it creates the most stunning examples of deep, complex, lush Austrian wines. The wines show their best with age and are becoming increasingly difficult to find on the secondary market, so bury some of these in your cellar for 10 years then revisit them. It will be worth it... -jfr

Muster, Sepp 2011 Steiermark Zweigelt

Ripe, pure, vibrant Zweigelt. It manages to be concentrated without getting jammy -- instead, it's simply juicy, dark, and delicious, full of fruit that is herbaceous and piney. All this is complemented by tannins and good acidity. It's more textured than previous vintages and it will probably unwind a bit more as it ages in the bottle. But it is easy to approach now, and easily one of the most impressive, serious Zweigelts I've ever tasted, an expressive but structured, stable, natural wine. A perfect foil to lamb or steak. Two years in large, older Slovenian barrels, with barely any sulfur added and essentially undetectable amounts of free sulfur.  Jonathan Kemp

Nikolaihof 1998 Wachau Riesling Steinriesler

Last year the Saahs' released their 1999 'Steinriesler' which was essentially a 'Riesling vom Stein Federspiel' that had been raised in cask for over ten years prior to bottling. The story may sound familiar to those who've experienced Nikolaihof's legendary Vinhotek bottlings, but all those were Smaragd-level wines; this was their first experiment with a Federspiel that had been raised in this way, or so we thought. As it would turn out, they had started the experiment earlier with the 1998 but decided it just wasn't ready to release first. Whether or not you had a chance to try the stunning 1999, you won't want to miss this. "Steinriesler" is a charming colloquial name for the grape variety**, and while the wine certainly has charm, it's also loaded with depth and dimension. Not quite as expensive as the Vinothek bottlings, but every bit as fascinating and delicious. -jfr

**It's been brought to our attention that 'Steinriesler' is, in fact, a portmenteau coined by friend of both CSW and the Saahs family, critic extraordinaire, David Schilknecht. David combined 'Stein' (a reference to both the area's stony soil and the Wachau designation 'Steinfeder') with "riesler," the actual charming colloquial name for the grape variety, and the wine's moniker was born.

Busch, Clemens 2011 Mosel Pündericher Marienburg Riesling Fahrlay Terrassen

No offense to sweet Nelly Busch, but Fahrlay-Terrassen is really the big dog here. It's not classified as a GG since there's probably 11-12 grams RS; this puts it in "feinherb" territory, but I wouldn't want it anywhere else. Botrytis hit hard here in 2011 and this is a rather Wachau-esque take on the Marienburg; think Hirtzberger on the Mosel, with creamy richness and flavors of tangerine and apricot, all on a much lighter frame than you'd find over in Spitz. Superior length, breadth, ornate detail and a clear, vivid finish make this one of Clemens' most stunning wines of the vintage and one of the best we've tried from this estate. This is a textbook example of the Busch style and everything they do so well. Epic Mosel! (it was even better than the 2011 Felsterrasse, in my opinion, but don't tell that to Clemens since that's his favorite parcel of old vines) -jfr

Busch, Clemens 2012 Mosel Pündericher Marienburg Riesling Rothenpfad GG

(Tasted in January 2014) Aromatically a bit closed with very subtle yellow fruits, this will need time to open. Sensational palate — a super-complex melange of white fruits and minerals with fabulous intensity and length. This is a great and very young bottle of Riesling that is a testament to Clemens' great work in the vineyard and vinifications with wild yeasts and less sulfur. Highly recommended. DL

Busch, Clemens 2012 Mosel Vom Roten Schiefer Riesling Trocken

Lithe, light on its feet, very bright, and feminine. From red slate parcels on the Marienburg, this is rarely fermented completely dry. This vintage has maybe 15-18 g/l of residual sugar, and it stays very much in the background but serves to hold this sprightly wood nymph of a wine together. Delicious, electric, and singular. JK

Busch, Clemens 2013 Mosel Vom Grauen Schiefer Riesling Trocken

Vom Grauen Schiefer is Busch's counterpart to Vom Roten Schiefer -- a step up from the basic Riesling Trocken and all grown on grey slate. The aromatics are classic Busch; rich citrus oils, dark minerals and a hint of vanillin. On the palate the wine has great acidity and lightness, with stony white fruits and beautiful mineral flavors with lovely density and length. A great glass of Riesling at a reasonable price!

Falkenstein, Hofgut 2014 Saar Riesling Niedermenniger Herrenberg Spätlese Feinherb

The Niedermenniger Herrenberg is in full bloom in this weighty and balanced, barely off-dry Riesling. A wonderfully expressive nose offers aromas of honeycomb, papaya, and orange zest. The palate is broad and mouthwatering, gliding along with notes of peppermint and tarragon before a crystalline clean green plum finish.

Immich-Batterieberg 2011 Mosel Ellergrub Riesling

This was my favorite of the lineup in 2010 and it's in close competition for that title in 2011 again. We're in feinherb territory here (just off-dry), and we tasted parcels in the cellar from barrel and stainless steel tank. Both were simply amazing, with the barrel showing a slightly silkier texture. While Ellergrub is softer than the dry wines and doesn't display the herbaceous streak found in Batterieberg, it more than makes up for this with its elegance, balance, feeling of weightlessness and overall sense of purity. I wouldn't be surprised if Ellergrub quickly becomes the cult favorite the more that people get to know these wines. 1.4 hectare, blue slate. -jfr

Immich-Batterieberg 2012 Mosel Batterieberg Riesling

Batterieberg is a 1.1 hectare monopole of the estate's. It abuts the Mosel and is surrounded on all other sides by Zeppwingert. It's made up of blue and gray slate with quite a bit of quartz as well. Once again, this shows as the driest of the Immich lineup and the aromatics are focused and deeply mineral. True to what we've come to expect from this site, scrubby, salty minerality is on display in spades. Batterieberg is the most linear, laser-like and zippy of the lineup, with a dense mineral core and an insanely good, intricate finish. John Ritchie

Still very youthful, with a gorgeous concentration of fruit that is surrounded by layers of lithe acids, minerals, salt, and spice. From the poorest soils of Immich's holdings, this subtle, structured wine will no doubt slowly reveal itself to be quite a rich treat. Jonathan Kemp

Lauer, Peter 1991 Saar Riesling Brut Reserve

Florian Lauer and his importer keep blessing us with more and more bottles of recently-disgorged vintage Sekt and we're in love with the 1991. Like other releases, it still clearly tastes like Lauer and the Kupp but this strikes us as perhaps the most complex yet. Earthy, stony, mossy aromatics with a good dose of fruit on the palate; dried apricots, sponti flavors, really killer acid and of course, slate, slate, slate. Florian says it's fruitier than the '93; we say it's fantastic! -jfr

Lauer, Peter 2011 Saar Riesling Fass 11 'Schonfels'

Schonfels! It's the stony site that is so steep that our friend Lars nearly went tumbling down into the Saar on a recent visit. The site that has vines so old that the charming Florian Lauer isn't sure it makes sense to continue working the parcel, they produce so little wine for the amount of work it takes. The site that produces the most sought-after dry wine produced on the Saar. We have just a few cases, and it's just about as finessed, long and pure as anything I could imagine. -jfr

Lauer, Peter 2012 Saar Riesling Kupp GG

This is the wine formerly known as "Kupp 56" due to the fact that it comes from a mid-slope parcel of vines planted in 1956. Now it's Lauer's one GG that comes from the actual Ayler Kupp (Schonfels and Saarfeilser are both individual sites overlooking the Saar). The Kupp produces exceptional feinherb and sweet wines (see Stirn, Kern, Neuenbersch and the prädikat wines), but this is one of the finest, most mineral dry wines Florian's ever crafted from the slope. We love Lauer! -jfr

Lauer, Peter 2014 Saar Ayler Kupp Riesling Unterstenberg

Pale Golden in color, this wine really unfolds with time in the glass. The nose is expressive and complex with aromas of honeysuckle, white peaches, green plums, orange blossoms, and toasted almonds. The palate is finely balanced with a slumbering core of minerality that crescendos in the mid-palate with aromas of green plums, fennel, and tamarind through to a deliciously salty finish. (Fass 12).

Stein, Ulli 2011 Mosel Spätburgunder

Stein's Pinot Noir comes from steep slate sites largely in the village of St. Aldegund. The wine is the earthiest of the three Pinots on offer (Stein, Steinmetz and Falkenstein), and the most structured. It's not quite as bright and quaffable as the others but it's still fresh, with plenty of dark-toned minerality. Slate and Pinot are a fascinating combination, and we're lucky to be able to compare all three bottlings from each site. Pinot did quite well in the relatively ripe vintage of 2011, one in which the Rieslings could often lack some definition, but this red, in particular, is singing. -jfr

Vetter 2014 Franken Sylvaner

Unfiltered, this vintage was made in a mix of barrels and stainless steel. Very little sulfur is added, as is the case with many of Stefan’s wines. Beautifully aromatic with notes of fennel seed, wild flowers, and yellow apple--smells of the Franconian countryside. The palate is light as mineral water, fresh and pure, with notes of mixed citrus oils, greengage plum, delicate green apple, and yellow apricot. Cari Bernard
