In addition to the delicious Champagne, Reims offers plenty to stimulate the other senses.

Dazzling Champagne from a Trio of Cellars

Share

Just in time for the holidays, we are pleased to offer a selection of aged Champagnes from a trio of collectors. With bubbles from the most avant-garde growers to the more classically styled bottlings, there's something here for everyone. Of special interest are back vintage bottles from a number of the grower Champagnes on which we cut our teeth early in our wine careers. Happy hunting! John McIlwain

Agrapart 2010 Champagne Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Minéral

Mineral is a vintage-dated blend of Chardonnay from two particularly chalky lieux dits within the  grand cru villages of Cramant and Avize, with the grapes from Bionnes (Cramant) vinified in demi-muid and Le Champ Bouton (Avize) vinified in tank and blended in equal parts.

Agrapart 2010 Champagne Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs Vénus

Sourced from a small plot withing La Fosse, planted in 1959, Venus is named after the draft horse that plowed the vines. The soils are exceptionally chalky relative to the soils of other parts of Avize which have more clay, per Peter Liem. Aged under cork rather than crown cap and bottled without dosage, Venus is profoundly mineral and a study in chalk, with the old vines' deep roots preserving that sense of terroir even in warmer or 'off'  vintages.

Bérêche, Raphael NV Champagne Brut Reflets d'Antan Base 11

For holiday celebrations, Champagne is a must. Not just for the festive association of bubbles, but also because it is truly one of the most versatile wines to grace one's table. The inherent acidity of the wine cuts through the richness of the foods, while the bubbles and moderate alcohol invigorate the palate rather than tire it. One of my favorite Champagnes for the table (not just Thanksgiving or Christmas) is Bérêche's Reflets d'Antan. Based on a perpetual cuvée dating from the 1980's, the wine combines the vivid, nervy fruit of a recent vintage with the burnished, textural and aromatic complexity of the aged wines which make up the 'solera.' The secondary fermentation under cork rather than crown cap adds an additional layer of finesse with a delicate bead and soft mousse. This will pair beautifully with most of the foods on your holiday table (skip the marshmallows, please). Better served in a white wine glass to allow  the aromas to develop.  John McIlwain

Bouchard, Cedric 2011 Champagne Roses de Jeanne Blanc de Blanc La Bolorée

In many ways Bolorée is as much an expression of Cedric Bouchard's aesthetic as it is an expression of terroir. It is made in tiny quantities from 50-year-old parcel of Pinot Blanc planted on chalk rather than the typical argilo-calcaire (clay and limestone) of the Aube. And while Pinot Blanc can be a bit vapid in some cases, Bouchard's has a taut, mineral, and nervy architecture beneath the richness of the fruit. John McIlwain

Collin, Ulysse 2011 Champagne Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Pierrières

Olivier Collin has been producing Champagnes of poise, power, and terroir since 2004. His "Pierrières" bottling derives from a 1.2HA plot of 30+ year old vines in Vert-Toulon southwest of Vertus. The soil here is very thin and comprised of chalk and black silex. The aromatics are spicy and savory while the palate is trim and elegant. If you could call any of Collin's wines precocious, this would be the one. The 2011 edition contains 30% reserve wine from 2010 and is just a touch more forward than previous years. The nose offers a combination of yellow fruit, sea spray, and crushed herbs. The palate, while somewhat sinewy and almost startlingly flinty and chalky, evolves to show layers of complex ripe fruit and spice notes on the long and quite detailed finish. Patience will certainly reward the Champagne lover who squirrels away a bottle of two of this beautiful blanc de blancs. John McIlwain

Maison Bérêche 2007 Champagne Côte des Blancs "Côte" disg. 01/16, 4g/l

Sourced from the grand cru village of Cramant in the Côte des Blancs, La Côte Grand Cru 2007 is beginning to display the aged character of Champagne from the famed village, a balance of mineral precision with the burnished fruit character of long aging sur latte. On the nose lemon oil, honeycomb, and brioche aromas overlay hints of seashell, and stone. The palate shows hints of halzelnut, brown butter, Seville orange, salt, and crushed herbs on a creamy, rich, rounded, finish with fine bead and good persistence. (4g/L dosage, disgorged 01/16.) Ruppert-Leroy 2012 Champagne Brut Nature "Fosse-Grely" Autrement

We have waited all summer for the no sulfur added Fosse-Grely "Autrement" and it's finally here! Sourced from organically and biodynamically grown grapes in the chalky/clay soils of single, north-west facing, amphitheater-shaped parcel, this wine is 100% Pinot Noir and brilliantly golden in color with a finely beaded mousse. The nose offers aromas of Cortland apples, hazelnuts, anise, toffee, and lime blossom. While the palate is alive with a powerful minerality that carries notes of Jonagold and Granny Smith apples, fenugreek, and linden blossom through to a hazelnut finish. Finely balanced and delicious! Vouette et Sorbée 2005 Champagne Extra Brut Extrait

A new cuvée from Côtes-des Bar sensation Vouette et Sorbée is cause for celebration for lovers of pure, organic Champagnes. Extrait is a late-disgorge bottling from a single vintage, bottled without dosage. The 2005 is 70% Pinot Noir from the Sorbee vineyard by grower Bertrand Gautherot's house and 30% Chardonnay from the Biaunes vineyard where they source Blanc d'Argile. The wine has a pale gold robe and fine bead.  The nose has notes of honey, dried orange peel, fresher red-fruit,  and citrus aromas (tangerine, blood orange). The palate shows great energy, with candied orange peel, red fruit, and pungnet mineral flavors with notes of brioche and crushed herbs. Quite dry, but by no means austere, this has good mid-plate density with a hint of burnished character on the long, persistent, punchy finish. This is linear rather than broad and a makes a convincing case for aging wines from the Aube. John McIlwain

Vouette et Sorbée 2006 Champagne Extra Brut Extrait R

This wine is in the warehouse and will not be available for pick-up or delivery until after Labor Day.

Extrait is a newly-released late-disgorged cuvée from biodynamic grower Vouette et Sorbée. The 2006 is 60% Pinot Noir 40% Chardonnay.  It has a golden robe, soft mousse, and a fine bead. The nose shows aromas of Seville orange peel, cocoa, mint, with notes of autolyse. The palate offers flavors of honeycomb, orange oil, sous-bois, and stone,  with hints of brine and broth on the broad, verging on muscular finish. This is vinous and comes off richer, perhaps more powerful still than the 2005. The long lees aging adds compelling layers of complexity to an already fascinating expression of Aube terroir. This is a essential drinking for fans of Vouette et Sorbée's Champagne!  Disgorged 5/16 and bottled without dosage. John McIlwain

Agrapart 2008 Extra Brut Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs L'Avizoise

The clay and limestone soils of the neighboring grand cru parcels of Les Robarts and La Voie d"Epernay, in the village of Avize, were planted almost 50 years ago with Chardonnay vines that give the fruit to Agrapart's L'Avizoise. The 2008 vintage is in fine form with a brilliant golden color and a beautifully beaded mousse. Tropical aromas of pineapple and guava mingle with scents of apple crisps and smoky notes to make for a complex and dynamic nose. The palate is expansive, but detailed with aromas of grapefruit, Goldrush apple, and hyacinth before a finely pointed saline finish. Weighty and delicious! (Disgorged 4/2015).

Bérêche, Raphael 2006 Champagne 1er Cru Ludes Le Cran

This vintage of Bérèche's "Le Cran" is the best yet (given, there have only been three...). The most powerful of his single vineyard wines, it highlights the terroir of Ludes, where the winery is located. These are the vineyards Bérèche first farmed organically. From midslope parcels and a blend of equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the base wines are aged in old barrels and cork is used rather than capsule for the second fermentation and lees aging. In 2006 the wine is slightly more delicate, less oxidative, and more chiseled than in 2005. The nose offers fleshy orchard fruits, stones, fresh mint, and white flowers. The finish is extremely long and impressive. It's a wine that stands up to food and always reminds this drinker ever-so-slightly of a white wine from the Jura for its intense minerality and high acidity. Three thumbs up! -msb

Light golden in color and carried by gently rising beads, Le Cran begins with ripe red currants, dark mint chocolate, toffee, and honeycomb that dovetail into red and black peppercorns, smoked venison, and cinnamon sticks. The palate is dark-toned and delicious with highlights of toffee-covered hazelnuts and black plums before an anise seed, cherry cola finish (Disgorged 1/13, Dosage 3g). -David Salinas

Bérêche NV (2012 Base) Extra Brut Rose Campania Remensis

Bérêche's Campania Remensis is a consistently fascinating rosé Champagne, in a category fraught with uninspiring wines. The 2012 base is 65% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, and 5% still red wine from Ormes on the western side of the Montagne de Reims. This year the robe is more of a salmon pink rather than copper color of previous vintages. The nose is redolent of wild strawberry, blood orange zest, vanilla bean, raspberry, and ginger. The palate balances whip-crack acidity with layers of ripe fruit flavors and savory undertones. The balance here is impeccable and the finish textured and nuanced. This  is a beautiful and deft rosé!  John McIlwain

Bouchard, Cedric "Vintage 2004" Champagne Inflorescence Blanc de Noirs La Parcelle

Though the vineyard called "La Parcelle" belongs to Bouchard's father, Cedric is responsible for the farming and the winemaking: harvesting by hand, crushing by foot, no dosage, no fining or filtration. The wine sees 80 months of aging on the lees, the longest élevage of any of Bouchard's wine. The wine is intensely minerally and tangy with a long and rocky finish. -msb

Bouchard, Cedric 2006 Champagne Inflorescence Blanc de Noirs La Parcelle

Bouchard purchased the .73 hectare "Parcelle" that gives us this wine in the early 2000s from a neighbor who had been doing particularly good work in the vines. He also bought all the old stocks of wine from this parcel, which allowed him to release 1999, 2000, etc... In 2004 he began to vinify "La Parcelle" himself. This is always one of my favorites from Bouchard, especially as it has more bottle age than the rest of the offerings, which aids significantly in the development of fine mousse. -msb

Brochet, Emmanuel 2006 Champagne Extra Brut 1er Cru Mont Benoit

We haven't yet had the chance to taste this vintage wine from Emmanuel Brochet, but we are salivating at the prospect. The wine has a higher percentage of Chardonnay (40%) in the blend than the non-vintage Mont Benoït from Brochet. The wine is matured in barrel with malolactic fermentation blocked, which guarantees a very chiseled style of Champagne. From 30-60 year old vines, certified organic, planted on clay and limestone soil. -msb

Brochet, Emmanuel NV Champagne 1er Cru Le Mont Benoit Extra-Brut (10/

Organic vigneron Emanuel Brochet farms makes one of our favorite Champagnes from a meticulously farmed 2.5 hectare plot called 'Le Mont Benoit' in the village of Villers-aux-Noeuds. All three major Champagne grapes are grown in the chalky-clay soils over Cretaceous chalk of the mid-slope vineyard. The 2010/09 base Le Mont Benoit extra-brut  is composed of 50% Pinot Meunier, 25% Pinot Noir, 25%Chardonnay and spent 47 months aging sur lie (Dosage 4g, Disgorged 1/2014). Brochet's Champagnes always show an overt minerality, which expresses itself in a broader earthy character. This is at once nervy, and resonant. The ripeness of the 2009 fruit balances the leaner nature of the 2010 vintage. The tension between the fruit and savory mineral notes is intriguing. The aromatic profile is cool-toned with pear, citrus peel and seashell dominating. The palate is medium-bodied, deep, and rich with a salty dry, savory, lingering finish. This would pair beautifully with crudo or Belon oysters. -John McIlwain

Collin, Ulysses 2009 Champagne Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Roises R

The Chardonnay vines that go into Collin's "Les Roises" bottling are 60 years old; this is very old for Champagne vines and they suffer from two maladies called "millerandage" and "court-noué," which may contribute to the intense concentration of this wine. "Millerandage" means that the vine yields small berries of very different sizes that ripen irregularly, and "court-noué" is a disease of the vines, themselves, which results in a decline in vigor. Yet this wine is absolutely incredible and special, and probably the most age-worthy of Collin's wines because of the sheer concentration and density of the juice in the bottle. Less open at this point than the Pierrieres and more pillar-like, this is the wine to throw in your cellar for ten years or so... -msb

Collin 2010 Champagne Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs Les Maillons

Olivier Collin's "Les Maillons" bottling is an arresting and unique bottle of wine. Unlike Collin's other single vineyard wines, which come from close to his winery in Congy, Les Maillons is half an hour away by car, and these 40+ year old vines are planted on dark, clay rich soil. As always with Collin's Champagnes, the grapes are harvested at low yields and very ripe, resulting in a rich, complex finished product that is packed with intense, stony flavors. Les Maillons is faintly pink in the glass, and offers vivid red fruit aromas of sour cherry, red currant, and cranberry. The wine is unapologetically dry on the palate and fleshes out with time open. Don't serve it too cold! -Sophie Barrett

Collin, Ulysse 2011 Champagne Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs Les Maillons

The Champagnes of Ulysses Collin are among the most distinctive we are lucky enough to taste. From his cellars in Congy, located to the west of the Côte des Blancs, Olivier Collin produces serious, vinous, Champagnes of terroir. His "Les Maillons" bottling is one such wine. From 40+ year-old vines in Barbonne-Fayel in the Sézannais planted in soils of heavy clay and chalk and harvested at low yields "Les Maillons" is ripe, dense, rich, and complex. The 2011 edition (with 20% reserve wine from 2010) is a bit backwards upon opening, but comes into focus with a bit of air. Faintly copper-hued in the glass, Les Maillons has vibrant notes of dark red fruits and crushed herb. The ample palate is dense, stony, and chiseled without any of the greenness that marks many of the 2011-based Champagnes. For a wine of its scale, it is remarkably agile and poised—think Muhammad Ali rather than Larry Holmes. John McIlwain

Collin, Ulysse 2011 Champagne Le Rosé Saignée Les Maillons

This is the inaugural vintage of Ulysse Collin's Rosé Saignée Les Maillons, from the admittedly difficult 2011 vintage. Made from 100% Pinot Noir planted in 1971 in Les Maillons located Barbonne-Fayel in the Aube whose soils are made up of chalk and heavy clays. The grapes are macerated on their skins for 18 hours and aged in oak for a year. Saignée rosés can be a fairly difficult Champagnes to produce: one risks over-extraction and resulting bitterness or deficient acidity and a lack of balance. Ulysse Collin manage to negotiate this deftly. The nose is high-toned and redolent of wild hedge fruit and alpine brush. The palate is fresh and mineral, with herbal undertones, red fruits, and a savory coolness to the finish. There is more poise than I normally associate with saignée Champagne as the sense of tannins is present without seeming prominent. While the wine shows the vintage character of 2011, it has a sense of volume and energy which not all producers managed. -John McIlwain

Doquet, Pascal 1995 Champagne Le Mesnil "Coeur de Terroir"

We learned from Champagneguide.net that this is the first all-Mesnil bottling that Pascal Doquet made once he took over the Domaine. Some of the base wine was aged in wood with no malolactic fermentation, this is a very high acid wine with lots of cut, even with dosage and almost two decades after the vintage. Slightly shrill and closed right out of the gate but with good structure and shelly, savory length on the palate, the wine becomes much more open and deliciously oxidative after 2-3 hours. Cashew-y and burnished but still deeply earthy and savory. The wine's sweet and nutty tones are balanced by savoriness and minerality. This is not a creamy Blanc de Blancs; the wine is taut and textured and a beautiful example of mature Mesnil. MSB

Larmandier-Bernier 2010 Champagne Grand Cru Extra Brut Les Chemins D'Avize

A relatively new cuvée for Pierre Larmandier, Les Chemins d'Avize was born of a desire to vinify, separately, two of his best parcels (Le Chemin de Plivot & Le Chemin de Flavigny), which had previously been included in the blend for his Longitude cuvée. Desire drove perseverance for Pierre, in the form of acquiring a new, smaller press to use with grapes from these two chalky sites. Les Chemins shines a stately golden yellow in the glass and sports a super-fine mousse. The nose shows delicate aromas of white flowers, lime-wood, chestnuts, and thyme. While palate courses with a finely-grained minerality that carries tones of Meyer lemons, chamomile, and white peaches through to a salty, savory finish. From vineyard to cellar to bottle this speaks volumes of two great Côte des Blancs terroirs and of one of Champagne's great growers. (Disgorged 11/14).

Laval, Georges NV (2010 Base) Champagne Cumières Premier Cru Brut Nature

Domaine Georges Laval is the epitome of a tiny, artisan estate. The estate is just 2.5 hectares in the 1er Cru village of Cumières, close to Ambonnay and Bouzy but with full southern exposition. Vincent Laval makes a miniscule amount of extremely terroir-driven wine (we are one of the few places in NY offering Laval). The estate has been organic since 1971 and is certified with Ecocert. Fermentation takes place in barrel with indigenous yeasts; there is no fining, filtration or cold-stabilization, and minimal use of sulfur. It is 50% Chardonnay and then split between Pinot Noir and Meunier. This edition of the Cumières is based on the steely 2010 vintage. The wine smells like delicate wildflower honey and fresh cut grass. It's extremely mineral-driven and resonant on the palate, and very chalky on the finish. Brut Nature Champagne lovers dream come true... (disgorged April 2013)  MSB

Marie-Courtin 2011 Champagne Concordance Sans Soufre

There are no two ways about it. This is a natural Champagne made from biodynamically farmed Pinot Noir and then vinified with native yeasts for both the alcoholic fermentation and the prise de mousse. Finally, the Concordance is free of any added sulfur. The Aube's warmer climate and Dominique's great farming have resulted in a Blanc de Noirs that will settle any doubts about the quality of the 2011 base vintage. Pale golden yellow in the glass and sporting a finely beaded mousse, the aromas of the Concordance are strikingly pure and vibrant with notes of ripe Cortland apples, red currants, fresh raspberries and a hint of brioche. The palate is pure with a fine minerality that carries aromas of cranberries and red plums through to a lengthy and savory finish. Beautiful Champagne! Pierre Peters 2007 Champagne Cuvée Speciale Les Chétillons

While Pierre Péters has been making Champagnes under that name since 1947, the family has been tending vines since the mid-19th century and estate bottling since 1919. They farm 18 hectares of vines spread across the Côte des Blancs with 90% Of their vines spread across the grand cru villages of Avize, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, and Oger with a majority planted in Le Mesnil. They farm without resorting to insecticides or herbicides and plant cover crops to reduce yields. The wines are fermented in tank and undergo malolactic fermentation. If you are looking for Blanc de Blancs Champagnes that express electric chalky minerality, Pierre Péters are masters of the form. They are poised, chiseled, and pure. Their top vintage-dated wine, from the Les Chetillons lieu-dit in Mesnil-Sur-Oger is one of Champagne’s greatest wines. With vines ranging in age from 35 to 70 years, Les Chetillons communicates the incisive chalkiness of the vineyard site, while balancing it with pure, concentrated fruit. Even within the context of Le Mesnil’s soils, the sense of chalk here is even more vivid. The 2007 is taut, sleek, coiled, and intense with a depth that is currently implied. In the glass, it begins to express its underlying grace and complexity with air. The mineral energy should integrate with its confident fruit in a few years emerging in a wine of seamless elegance and harmony. -John McIlwain

Prevost (La Closerie) NV (2011) Champagne Les Beguines R

Lemony fresh, creamy with fine, seemless, elegant bubbles, both full-bodied and somehow weightless and sheer, this is an excellent release of Jérôme Prevost's "Les Béguines." 100% Pinot Meunier from Gueux in the nothern Montagne de Reims, this is quite possibly the most lazer-like and mineral Pinot Meunier we've tasted. With only two hectares, Prevost's wines are quite hard to come by and much prized by lovers of terroir-focused grower Champagne. The finish is very long, leaving a lasting impression of zesty, lemony acidity and stoney-ness. MSB

Savart NV Champagne Brut Ecueil "L'Accomplie"

Frédéric Savart's "L'Accomplie" bottling picks up where "L'Ouverture" leaves off. Also from vines in Ecueil, the wine is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. Complex and elegant, this wine feels drier than "L'Overture" and sees an additional year of lees aging. The finish has pronounced and lip smacking minerality and the texture is fine and creamy. MSB

Vouette et Sorbée 2011 Champagne Blanc d'Argile

Made from low-yielding biodynamically-farmed Chardonnay planted in the Kimmeridgian marls in the west-facing vineyard site of Biaunes, Blanc d'Argile is a blanc de blancs any many ways closer in character to Chablis than the chiseled Champagnes of the Marne. The distinction between the two types of chalky soil is palpable in the pungently mineral Blanc d'Argile. The nose is briny and citrus-inflected, with savory herbal notes. This cool-toned fruitiness (indicative of the 2011 vintage) carries over on the palate with a range of yellow fruit, seashell, and flinty sapidity. Typically, the long ripening period afforded by the vineyard manifests itself in a denser, richer, nearly flamboyant fashion; this vintage shows a leaner cut highlighting the Kimmeridgian pedigree. (Disgorged 5/2014).

Vouette et Sorbée 2011 Champagne Saignée de Sorbée R

The Saignée de Sorbée, from the Portlandian soils of the Sorbée vineyard, is one of Vouette et Sorbée's most original and individual bottlings. A saignée rosé, this has deep concentrated pomegranate and raspberry fruits and savory, peppery, meaty flavors. With its power and stony, ferrous intensity, it tastes as if Gautherot bled the terroir of this vineyard straight into this idiosyncratic and singular Champagne! Jonas Mendoza
