Abe Schoener has made a dizzying number of cuvees in the eight years since Scholium Project's first release, including a number of impressive Verdelho-based wines. Verdelho can be hard to finesse, with oily aromas and aggressive lime-aid flavors that announce themselves loudly and don't back down. Lost Slough Vineyard in the Sacramento River Valley is the surprising source of Schoener's most compelling Verdelhos: "The soil is terrible, essentially dried mud. You would never think that this vineyard would be capable of making such good wines... but every year, the proof is in the pudding." The Wisdom of Theuth is a mineral-rich collision of clarity and undercover class: salty and stony with lime blossom, lime zest, key lime and the lavender seed of young Savennieres. Quiet but seething with the intensity of an introspective Gruner or Chablis. -AR
