The Domaine de la Tour du Bon 2018 Bandol is a blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsault, and Carignan. Vines are located outside the village of Le Castellet, which is a very warm and sunny part of Bandol that sees little rainfall. Soils are a mix of clay and limestone, with a red-tinted subsoil. The estate is farmed under organic methods, and moving towards some biodynamic field treatments. Fermentation takes place in open cement vats and aged in wood for at least 18 months. The wine shows a fantastic earthy nose, full of smoke and salt, with fruits of red apple and plum. Accents of balsamic and herbs are present, but more delicate. On the palate, flavors of leather, beach plum, and black cherry set the base for lighter notes of salt and black pepper, and green herbs. The tannins are rather soft, with the exception of a light grip down the tongue. Acidity is balanced, lending a refreshing edge to this savory red. The Tour du Bon will be perfect for your spring lamb and summer steaks or burgers, but definitely has many years of cellaring potential. A fantastic bottle! David Hatzopoulos
