Hager, Matthias 2021 Niederösterreich Riesling Terassen

From the northern Kamptal , whose cool winds and nights and stony soil around Mollands are responsible for the fruity, spicy and mineral taste of these wines. An easy drinking and elegant riesling with notes of citrus, white flowers, peach and wet rocks, underscored by vibrant acidity, a faint spritz and juicy peachade flavor. Perfect with sushi and seafood appetizers, salads, green veggies and fresh cheeses. Certified Biodynamic and screwcap closure; the ultimate picnic wine for summer! Giselle Hamburg

Bürklin-Wolf, Dr. 2020 Pfalz Riesling Hommage à Luise

A blend of biodynamically farmed grapes from cool sites near the forest in Wachenheim and fermented to just off-dry, the Hommage à Luise offers attractive of nose of white peach, apple mint, and cinnamon. The racy, just mid-weight palate hews the line between Kabinett and Feinherb sweetness, with juicy stone fruit and red apple flavors astride a fine bead of limestone minerality  proceeding to a brisk, zesty finish. Jakob Tennstedt 2018 Mosel Riesling Perlmutt

Though this is bottled under the name Perlmutt, this derives from the cool Taubenhaus parcel that has Tennstedt has subsequently given up as too much work even on this small scale. The 2018 has a yellow-golden robe (some skin contact, one presumes). The nose is redolent of bee pollen, bees wax, chamomile, spearmint, and bergamot. Decidedly dry and sinuous, with stone fruit and apple skin flavors underlain with salty and iron-like mineral structure and striking acidity for the vintage and a long incandescent finish. What is so surprising is the dynamism and energy here. There's an aliveness that's hard to describe, but it's compelling and beckons the next sip. John McIlwain

Jakob Tennstedt 2019 Mosel Riesling Valke

From a lower parcel in the Ungsberg,  Valke, named after the Kestrel, is perhaps the wildest and most profoundly umami of the Tennstedt wines. The robe is a more burnished than the Musari from just up the hill. The nose offers aromas of acacia, dashi, orange oil, iron, and a touch of Chenin-like wooly notes. The palate is concentrated, and for lack of a better word intense, with a steely attack and a broad, muscular, mid-palate that offers a nearly operatic flurry of both savory and pure fruit notes.  The concentration here begs for attention and that attention is rewarded as the wine seems to shapeshift between stone fruit and pungent earth and even gamy flavors. It's a bit overwhelming yet truly compelling, akin to hearing Ornette Coleman or Schoenberg for the first time and recognizing the greatness of what you are hearing even if you don't quite get it. One of the most singular wines I've tasted and one that I can't quite get out of my head. John McIlwain

Koehler-Ruprecht 2017 Pfalz Kallstadter Saumagen Ries Spatlese Trocken 'R'

Schaefer, Willi 2019 Mosel Graacher Domprobst Riesling Auslese #11

The 2019 Graacher Domprobst Auslese #11 is filigreed and racy for the pradikat, showing all the verve and brightness of the vintage. The nose shows a touch of sponti, but time in the glass reveals pretty aromas of pear skin, orange blossom, peach nectar, and cool mint leaves. There's a delicate honeyed sweetness that dances across the palate balanced by pitch-perfect acidity and waves of luscious stone fruit and citrus flavors with a subtle herbal undercurrent. Framing this is a zesty, mouthwatering stoniness leading to impeccable balance even at this young age. This is already lovely, but this will dazzle when mature in 8-10 years and for decades beyond. An emotionally gratifying wine! John McIlwain

Schaefer, Willi 2020 Mosel Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese #10

The Graacher Domprobst Spätlese Ap 10 comes from selected parcels across the the vineyard. The deep clays beneath the weathered Devonian slate insure against hydric stress in warm vintages. The 2020 offers a bit of reduction upon opening giving way to intoxicating aromas of white peach nectar, Cara Cara orange peel, exotic spices, and smoke. Lush stone fruit and citrus oil flavors are underlain by a pleasingly zesty thread of acidity lending drive and energy to the layered and lingering finish. The complexity here is already impressive, but time in the cellar will reveal more stony nuance and fruit expression. John McIlwain

Desire Lines Wine Co. 2020 Anderson Valley Wiley Vineyard - Riesling

Planted in 1976 by Brad Wiley (of the publishing family), the profile here leaned just a bit broader, with the citrus rounded out with stone fruit and tropical notes and a beautiful savoriness in the finish. This is delicious right now but there is no hurry!

Desire Lines Wine Co. 2020 Cole Ranch Mendocino - Riesling

From vines planted in 1973, aged in neutral wood. Deep lemon and lime character and a distinct mineral component backed up by incredible acidity. The combination of structure and dry extract leads me to think that this has great potential for the future if you can find room in the cellar, but alongside a plate of ham or oysters now you'd be hard-pressed for a better companion.

Hermann J. Wiemer 2020 Finger Lakes Riesling Dry

Hermann J. Wiemer saw the great potential of the Finger Lakes to create high-quality cool-climate Riesling as they do in his native Mosel, Germany. The winery was founded in the 1979, one of the first in the region, and continues to be a benchmark for excellent Finger Lakes Riesling. Despite the incredibly challenging weather conditions which can lead to disease-pressure, they are committed to sustainable farming by not using herbicides or insecticides, and reducing their need for fungicides by managing the canopies to increase airflow. The dry Riesling is an excellent example of the great potential of this region for cool-climate varieties.

Nathan K. 2019 Finger Lakes Riesling

Soft white almond blossoms, ripe apricot, a bit of sweet herbs, wet stone, Meyer lemon zest, all with a slight drizzle of honey. The palate is vibrant and juicy bringing plenty of energy but balanced with enough weight so it does not feel the least bit sharp or thin. Enjoy this wine now, as I did, with a spicy red pepper flake, anchovy and parsley pasta, or put it in the cellar for several years and wait for those honeyed and golden notes to really come through!
