Children's Atlas of Wine Bordeaux made by Farmers

Bordeaux is much more often thought of as a land of château and money and branding than it is a region driven by vineyard specificity and farming. And there are definitely reasons! In fact, the region has struggled mightily with the erosion of its cachet because of exactly this neglect.

But Bordeaux is also enormous, and full of exceptions. Just because it's one of the oldest and most powerful commercially traded wine regions in the world doesn't mean that, hidden off-piste and away from its fancy zip codes, there aren't slopes farmed by growers, a sense of place, and some real bargains.

Whether in Bordeaux proper or just upriver in the beginnings of the 'hill country,' we'll find three beautiful wines that show the idiosyncratic, place-driven, farming-focused side of Bordeaux.

Children's Atlas of Wine Heart of the Loire

The longest river in France, the last wild river in Europe: the Loire contains multitudes. Its center, between Saumur and Amboise, is dedicated principally to two great varieties: Chenin, and Cabernet Franc. The heart of the Loire yields some of its most powerful, textured, and complex wines, wines that gesture towards Bordeaux and white Burgundy while remaining uniquely themselves, and bargains to boot. From Montlouis to Saumur-Champigny, from Puy-Notre-Dame to Chinon, we’ll take a detailed look at the sites and producers that make this slice of the river special, and continue exploring my favorite region of France.

Children's Atlas of Wine Paris Basin

What connects Burgundy with Saumur? What links Champagne to the white cliffs of Dover? The Paris Basin! 75 million years' worth of shallow tropical seas swum by plesiosaurs and full of star-shaped protists living their lives and falling to ancient seabeds.

Today, the Paris Basin is a giant limestone bowl home to some of the world's most celebrated wine regions. We'll use these rocks as a lens to drink in and around Sancerre and Chablis, the Côte d'Or and Champagne, and learn how geology can shape our understanding of the wine in our glass.

Deep Dive Grenache 3 Ways

A variety with, potentially, as much complexity and variation as Pinot (for one thing, it too comes in three colors!). Nonetheless, Grenache, Pinot's Mediterranean country cousin, is more often blended away or used for bulk wine than contemplated on its own.

I've been guilty of this myself, I'll be honest. But, as so often happens when you study and taste and read a lot about a given wine thing, I'm increasingly fascinated by the Grenaches that force me to change my mind: wines of beautiful perfume, supple fruit, and sun-kissed richness that can make an awful lot of different people happy while staying honest.

If you're unconvinced, or starting a mental dialogue with yourself about alcohol and balance, you sound like me! Like me, you should probably take this class.

Deep Dive Rebels in Classic Wine Regions

There’s a reason why wild experimentalists typically come from corners of the map you’ve never heard of before. When you’re trying to tend vines in some of the most celebrated places in the wine world, tradition hangs heavy. There are family members to fight, financial barriers to hurdle, not to mention the expectations of drinkers who may not be happy to be surprised by a bottle from a benchmark appellation.Nonetheless, just as in wine’s lesser-known fringes, there are dynamic voices bucking the current: renewing abandoned traditions, and trying something new.

Deep Dive Syrah's Family Tree

In a funny kind of way, you can understand some things about a variety by getting to know its family: its parents and siblings, the relatives that stayed close to home and the ones that went travelling.

As winter arrives, we'll meet the smoky, meaty, peppery majesty of syrah. We'll get to know its parents, mondeuse blanche and dureza, and its Italian cousin teroldego. We'll climb the Alps and cross oceans, talk about style and sense of place, and see what drinking a grape's family tree can teach us about what a grape variety is.

Drink with James Blue-Chip on a Budget Vol. 2

The holidays involve a lot of wine decisions we're making, not for ourselves, but for others. Is this fancy enough? Will everyone at the table like it? Is this a good gift? What can I afford?

Returning for a second edition, a few new tips, and all-new wines, we'll discover how to drink champagne on a Miller High Life budget, talk about aging wine and "bad" vintages, and taste three wines with a classic profile that absolutely over-deliver.

Whether it's Burgundy or Bordeaux, Barolo or Brunello, a wine to cellar or the fifth bottle you open at Thanksgiving, let's think about where value in wine really lies.

Drink with James Unfair Game

Blind-tasting can be a party-trick, or an exam problem, or a quality check. Or it can be a way to learn how to trust yourself.

A lot of the time, though, the wines people getting tested on this sort of thing tend to blind all fall under the nebulous category of "classic" and "typical": a list of permitted wine styles and regions, criticized as 'unfair' when the wine in the glass doesn't meet those standards.

But where's the fun in that? We'll talk about what a wine can show us blind, why some of the rules of 'fair game' condemn regions to being misunderstood, and taste through three thoughtful bottles that demonstrate just how good the unusual, atypical, and unfair can be.
